How Silicon Valley is Using Technology to Fight Wildfires

Believe it or not, there are multiple ways that Silicon Valley is using technology to fight wildfires. First, we’ll review the startup Rain based out of Palo Alto. Next, the Bay Area startup Zonehaven‘s map-based evacuation software that shows fire locations, escape routes, and evacuation zones. Last but not least, the utilization of artificial intelligence to process imagery from Cal Fire aircraft and send it to ground commanders.

Rain - Palo Alto

First, the Rain Industries system is capable of containing wildfires within 10 minutes of ignition. In short, it’s a network of drones that can spot small fires and put them out or dramatically slow them until firefighters arrive.

Zonehaven - San Francisco Bay Area

Second, the Bay Area startup called Zonehaven created a Community Evacuation Interface (CEI) to provide residents with the most reliable source for first-order evacuation updates.

Capella Space - San Francisco

Last but certainly not least, Capella Space is the first U.S. company to launch and operate Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites. Basically, these satellites monitor and provide quality imaging of Earth.

Capella Space developed both airborne and spaceborne prototypes to revolutionize Synthetic Aperture Radar. On December 3, 2018 Denali was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission, accelerating research and development for future Capella satellites.
