Indeed, making a list of the top terms & acronyms used in information technology isn’t as easy as it sounds. First, we thought of the ones we use in our current day-to-day. Next, we used Google to cross check our assumptions. Lastly, we listed each in flip cards below with brief definitions.

RFID
Radio Frequency Identification
Notably, RFID tags are readable codes that contain more information than Universal Product Code (UPC) labels and QR codes. Further, there are passive, semi-passive, and active RFID tags.
SEO
Search Engine Optimization
First, SEO is an established strategy for marketers to increase websites’ rankings in search engines. Next, it involves the use of metadata, title tag, and meta description.
IoT
The Internet of Things
Overall, the IoT allows people, animals, and objects to transmit information automatically over a network without interacting with a computer or another person. An example of this is tire pressure sensors.
NBIC
Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Cognitive Science
Commonly, NBIC refers to the latest emerging and converging technologies. Specifically, transforming humanity by similar means to using 3D printing to create artificial limbs.
SaaS
Software as a Service
Software as a Service models generally have the following characteristics:
- Updates are applied automatically without customer intervention
- The service is purchased on a subscription basis
- No hardware is required to be installed by the customer
AaaS
Analytics as a Service
Like SaaS, AaaS refers to the on-demand services that help give businesses a competitive chance at implementing data insights. By way of contrast, AaaS usually involves ongoing, not a one-time, payment.
NFC
Near Field Communication
If you’ve ever used “tap to pay” with a mobile device or credit card, you’ve had firsthand experience with NFC technology. Similarly, if you have ever ran a race with a pace chip, that is also likely NFC.
ESN
Enterprise Social Networking
Unlike traditional social media networking, ESN refers to an internalized social network platform. Like Yammer, Jive and Convo are also examples of ESN.
SMO
Social Media Optimization
Though this looks similar to SEO, SMO is considered one aspect of an overall SEO strategy. Businesses use SMO to optimize their websites, hopefully, through viral social sharing.
REEF
Retainable Evaluator Execution Framework
In reference to big data, REEF is an open sourced big data technology developed by Microsoft. Similar to its predecessors, it sits on top of a resource manager.
