What is a "White Elephant Gift Exchange"?
First of all, a White Elephant Gift Exchange (also referred to as Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa, and Redneck Christmas) is a gift exchange game. In contrast to other games, this one involves stealing gifts from others. Gifts are between $20 and $30.
Official Rules
To start, each player has one of two options: pick an unopened gift or steal someone else’s gift. Furthermore, a present can only be stolen once per turn, and after three swaps, the turn automatically ends.
- First, each player brings one wrapped gift to contribute.
- Second, players draw numbers to determine what order they will go in.
- Third, players sit or stand in a line where they can see the gift pile.
- Fourth, the first player selects a gift from the pool and opens it.
- Fifth, the remaining players can choose either to select an unwrapped gift or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen can also do the same – choose a new, unopened gift, or steal from another.
- Lastly, after all of the players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. When someone declines to steal a gift, the game ends.
