Unplugging from Social Media
Unplugging from social media can benefit you in many positive ways. Do you find yourself spending down time scrolling through your news feed or dashboard? For some, glancing at their phone and scrolling is almost autonomic.Â
Steps to Reduce Your Time Spent on Social Media
By taking the steps below, you can successfully reduce the time spent on social media. Turning off devices an hour before bed, muting notifications, and designating time each day for social media checking are merely a few of the ways you can begin to unplug from social media.
-
Turn Off Devices an Hour Before Bed
Similar to using the first hour of your day preparing to work, you should spend the last hour of your day preparing for rest. Unplugging from the social world and allowing yourself to unwind is crucial.
-
Turn Off Push Notifications
If you want to truly free yourself of the constant interruptions from another email, text message, or photo "like", turn off your push notifications. If something is urgent, you'll likely receive a call.
-
Hide Your Phone While Working
Another strategy that you can employ in your day-to-day is hiding your phone while working. If you don't want to go so far as to turning off push notifications, hiding your phone will have a similar effect.
-
Limit Yourself to One Device
While it may be tempting to multi-task by playing Angry Birds during a teammate's update during stand up, it'll be a large hit to your focus. Try limiting yourself to only using one device at a time, and better yet, only one for social media scrolling.
-
Schedule Social Media Time
If you have Facebook on your desktop, laptop, phone, and watch, where don't you have it? Throughout the day, you check your messages, notifications, and sometimes only your news feed.
-
Spend One Hour Per Day on Emails
If you stop what you're working on currently to respond to each email you receive when you receive it, your entire train of thought can be derailed.
-
Subscribe to Websites via RSS or Email
By subscribing to your favorite websites via RSS or email, you'll only receive updates that you want, as opposed to other things like friends' personal posts.
-
Use 3rd Party Applications to Post on Social Media
In the case that you're a social media manager, influencer, or need to keep your posts going regularly, you can use various third party applications to post to multiple accounts simultaneously.
-
Live Your Life
Stressing out about building the coolest or most stylish online profile isn't necessary. Do exciting things that you're interested in, write about your travels, try out a new sport or hobby. Whatever you pick, pick it for yourself, and you'll no longer feel reliant on getting satisfactions from "likes".
In Conclusion
Ultimately, unplugging from social media can be a refreshing, uplifting experience. Once you have cut the tether to your favorite social media platform, you’ll start to realize what truly makes you happy. In other words – you do you!Â
