Tim Berners-Lee

Tim Berners-Lee

Tim Berners-Lee is an engineer and computer scientist who, while working at CERN in the early 1990s, created HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).

Jina Anne

Jina is the lead designer on the Lighting Design System at Salesforce, as well as organizes Clarity, the first Design Systems conference.

Lea Verou is a web designer, web developer, and an assistant researcher at MIT. She is one of the few “Invited Experts” in the W3C CSS Working group.

Veerle Pieters

Veerle Pieters is a graphic designer, web designer, and a co-founder of the design agency Duoh. She is known for her great CSS tutorials.

Tim Berners-Lee
  • Born in 1955, Tim is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium that he founded and a Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Oxford
  • Tim’s first career after completing his studies at the University of Oxford at Queen’s College in 1976 was working as an engineer working primarily on transaction systems, message relays, and the technology used for barcodes.
  • Berners-Lee holds the founders chair in Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Tim was awarded the ACM A.M. Turing Award “For inventing the World Wide Web, the first web browser, and the fundamental protocols and algorithms allowing the Web to scale.” in 2016.
  • In November 2019 at the Internet Governance Forum in Berlin, Berners-Lee and the WWWF launched Contract for the Web – a campaign initiative to persuade governments, companies, and citizens to commit to the nine principles to stop “misuse” by those that aim to exploit, divide, and undermine.
Jina Anne
Mike Kus
  • Mike has amassed almost 800,000 followers on Instagram.
  • Kus is a firm believer in “doing things your way.”
  • Mike used to send designs of sneakers to Adidas.
  • He has consulted with companies such as Burberry, Red Bull, and Mixture.io, providing graphic and web design services through Mike Kus LTD.
Lea Verou
Veerle Pieters
  • Veerle Pieters founded Duoh! in 1992, originally providing print design in the form of logos, stationery, and brochures.
  • In 1996, she added web design to Duoh!’s offered services, and in 2000, officially founded Duoh! n.v. with Geert Leyseele.
  • If given the opportunity to provide advice to another designer that’s starting out, she would say to inform yourself and to, “keep on learning. Take time to experiment. That is hard, but very important…Reserve time to do something not work related, but creative, even if it’s 15 minutes a day.”
  • Veerle hopes to leave a legacy as someone who loved to share her work, experience, and things that inspire people.
Ana Tudor
  • Ana regularly writes posts on CSS-tricks.com such as CSS Grid Tricks, Masonry Solutions, Background Patterns, and more.
  • She is passionate about experimenting, learning new things, and is a huge fan of technological advance and its applications.
  • On a past Meetup event in June 2020, Ana described herself as, “not a dev, designer and most certainly not a role model. Just a stray cat trying to survive.”
