Are You Looking for a New Graphics Card?

Well, if you’re looking for a new graphics card, we’ve got great news for you! The GPU shortage is finally over, and you can now purchase AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards at their MSRP. What does that look like? Check out this graph from eBay that shows the average sales price for the Nvidia RTX 3080 over the 7 months:

So, why is this important? Well, over the course of the last six months, the street price of the average GPU has been halved. Additionally, the most popular and best “bang for your buck” graphics cards are seeing price drops. Even secondhand card prices are normalizing, with the 6900 XT going for $300 off its $999 MSRP.

Other dips include the AMD RX 6500 XT going for $179 instead of $199 and the Nvidia 3080 Ti going for $881 instead of $1,199.

Though these prices may seem promising, they aren’t lower for every newer card on the market. For example, the RTX 3060 Ti cards are going for a higher sticker price than the step up RTX 3070. Also, some stores like Best Buy are trying to get sales from newer customers to the market that haven’t been shopping around.

"There's a lot of pent up demand from actual gamers and consumers that have been holding off for the last two years due to the chip shortage, supply chain disruptions, and crypto bubble...You have to remember that for a lot of these consumers, this is their primary source of entertainment and socialization....those that wait understand that the latest and greatest will always be a lot harder to get their hands on than what's already available now."

In Conclusion

While some cards are seeing significant drops in pricing, there are a handful of reasons as to why now is not the best time for you to get a new graphics card. Some of those include the fact that the chips that power these GPUs are 2+ years old. Further, the age of the GPUs matters significantly more if you’re buying used – which increases the risk of you getting one that has been part of a cryptocurrency mining rig.
