Women's Self-Defense Series - Starting Soon

On June 4th, 2022, Staley Martial Arts will kick off its 6-week Women’s Self Defense Program. This program, led by professional and amateur MMA fighters Hayley “The Hailstorm” Turner and Sarah “Reptar” Jones, will teach various ways to escape certain grips/attacks and certain techniques to control/subdue someone much larger if escaping is not an option. Both standing and ground attacks will be addressed.

What is MMA?

MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, is a full-contact combat sport that usually takes place inside an enclosure such as a cage or ring. Sometimes, MMA is referred to as cage fighting, no holds barred (NHB), and ultimate fighting. It incorporates techniques from various combat sports from around the world. 

What to Expect

First, we will start with basic footwork and determine which side is your dominant side, which will translate directly into your fighting stance. Next, we will start with a variety of techniques that incorporate both striking and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so you will be prepared even if the fight goes to the ground.

This workshop was inspired by the success of Staley’s 4-Week Women’s Self Defense class at the McGaw YMCA in Evanston, IL. This course is intended to build confidence, awareness, and self-defense skills to empower women.
